Tonight's venue, the 64,640-capacity Olympic Stadium, is located at the foot of city's central Cherepanov Hill in Pechersk. It started life as the Red Stadium of Lev Trotsky and has enjoyed numerous face-lifts (minor and major) since.

Line up : Italy: Buffon, Balzaretti, Abate, Barzagli, Bonucci, Marchisio, De Rossi, Montolivo, Pirlo, Balotelli, Cassano, SUBS: Sirigu, De Sanctis, Maggio, Chiellini, Ogbonna, Motta, Giaccherini, Diamanti, Nocerino, Di Natale, Borini, Giovinco.
England: Hart, Johnson, Cole, Terry, Lescott, Gerrard, Young, Parker, Rooney, Welbeck SUBS: Green, Butland, Kelly, Baines, Jones, Jagielka, Walcott, Henderson, Downing, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Carroll, Defoe.
Cesare Prandelli, Italy coach: They're going to produce a high tempo and put their foot in a lot, so if we can set the tempo then we can do well.
Roy Hodgson, England manager: We need to take the game by the scruff of the neck because if Italy have the chance to control it, it could be a very long night for us.The match is under way.The tempo has not dropped, but the play has become a little less precise and fluid as the teams scrap for possession in midfield - a battle that the Italians seem to be edging at the minute.
Italy kick off this fascinating last quarter-final, with both sides battling to face Germany in the last four.

Opposition fans enjoy the match together in the Olympic Stadium.
Joe Hart can do nothing as Daniele De Rossi's effort from range swerves past him, but England are saved by the woodwork.
Glen Johnson shoots at goal from three metres but Gianluigi Buffon makes a remarkable save to keep Italy level.

Four of the five teams whose goalkeepers have had to make more than 13 saves at UEFA EURO 2012 are out. England's Joe Hart has made 15 saves.
Wayne Rooney gets on to the end of Glen Johnson's cross from the right, but the pressure from Ignazio Abate is just enough to force the effort off target.

Wayne Rooney's diving header flies over.
Balotelli (Italy) misses the target.
Mario Balotelli hits a wicked, swerving shot from range that looks dangerous, but eventually flies a comfortable distance over the bar for Joe Hart.
The referee blows for half-time.

Olympic Stadium: It was not for a lack of chances nor intent that it is still 0-0, Daniele de Rossi hitting the crossbar on three minutes the closest either side came but although Italy have had most possession and territory, England are countering really well.
The second half begins.
England get us under way and start brightly, getting the ball up the field quickly and putting Italy under pressure. Who will break the deadlock in this exciting contest?
Olympic Stadium : Both halves have now started with De Rossi going mighty close. Still very open.
MINUTE 52 : Montolivo (Italy) misses the target.Joe Hart's save bounces upwards and the midfielder is first to the ball three metres from goal but his effort is just over as Glen Johnson puts him under pressure.
MINUTE 53 : Milner (England) misses the target.England respond, but territory is wasted as the winger's low effort is no danger to Gianluigi Buffon's goal.
MINUTE 56 : Pirlo (Italy) takes the corner.
Great sliding tackle from Ashely Cole concedes the corner, but again it was Ignazio Abate that was springing down the right. Nothing comes of the Pirlo delivery.
Italy look to be building something, having possession deep in England territory. But that was the case before the break as well and England kept on countering.
MINUTE 60 : Carroll (in) - Welbeck (out) (England).
MINUTE 61 : Walcott (in) - Milner (out) (England).
The substitutions yet to make an impact for England largely as they are not having much of the ball.
Andrea Pirlo is surrounded by England players but is having an excellent game in the centre of midfield for Italy.
England are struggling to match Italy's range of passing at the moment - nobody in white can replicate the role that Andrea Pirlo is playing for the Azzurri, who seems to be able to find a man in space every time, in almost any circumstance.
MINUTE 78 : Diamanti (in) - Cassano (out) (Italy).MINUTE 80 :Nocerino (in) - De Rossi (out) (Italy).
Daniele De Rossi's volley squirms wide of the post.MINUTE 90+1 : Maggio (in) - Abate (out) (Italy).MINUTE 90+3 : Rooney (England) misses the target.
Rooney (England) misses the target. A last chance for England as Ashley Cole is slipped into the area on the left. His ball to the back post is headed back across the box by Andy Carroll and the Manchester United FC forward is unable to hit the target with an extravagant overhead kick.
The referee ends the second half. ET(EXTRA TIME)
Olympic Stadium: So the first 0-0 of UEFA EURO 2012 and the first extra time. Italy were dominant for sure but now it is about stamina. The first period of extra time begins. ET(EXTRA TIME) 1st halfAnother half an hour to play. Will this go the distance - will we see a penalty shoot-out ?
After that 90 minutes, Roy Hodgson is officially unbeaten in first five matches as England manager (4-1-0). Last to do this was Sven-Goran Eriksson, who won his first five matches.MINUTE 94 : Henderson (in) - Parker (out) (England).
100 MINUTE ,Balotelli (Italy) has an effort on goal. The referee brings the first period of extra time to an end.
ET(EXTRA TIME) 1st halfOlympic Stadium: Italy continue to be slightly on top but England, as just then through Walcott, can respond. Penalties loom (as they have in England's 2 previous one-off EURO QFs in 1996 and 2004).The second period of extra time begins.
Who can dig deepest here and take the bit by the teeth to find that decisive goal ?MINUTE 113: Diamanti (Italy) misses the target.Alessandro Diamanti blazes wide from a little to the left of the penalty spot after being picked out wonderfully by Federico Balzaretti. Another chance goes begging for the Azzurri.
England are soaking up pressure desperately here - they haven't seen the Italian half for an age. Fortunately, Italy's profligacy has favoured Roy Hodgson's side. The referee brings an end to the second period of extra time. England have held out and now we come to penalties.
With 19 saves to his name Joe Hart has now made more stops than any other goalkeeper at UEFA EURO 2012. Can he be a hero tonight ?
Gianluigi Buffon will be more than aware that England have won only one of seven penalty shootouts they've taken part in (v Spain in EURO 96). Will it prey on England minds ?
