Referee Craig Thomson's whistle kicks the game off, the visitors, the firm favourites, taking possession first.

San Siro: The Milan fans of the Curva Sud prepared a fantastic show ahead of the game. A huge drawing of Herbert Kilpin, the Nottingham-born founder the club, is surrounded by a banner saying "La storia siamo noi, onoriamola" – “History is us, let us honour it”.

After a rapid start from the hosts Barcelona are starting to find their rhythm, controlling possession for the last two minutes, getting comfortable with the ball and looking for the gaps in the home defence.

Minute '10' Messi (Barcelona) has an attempt on goal.
Lovely fast feet from the forward helps him skip past Philippe Mexès on the edge of the area, before his left-footed shot ricochets off a defensive body and behind.
Minute 10 Xavi Hernández (Barcelona) delivers the corner.
Milan are troubled by a second corner in quick succession. Firstly Philippe Mexès slices a clearance behind, before Gerard Piqué is given more than one opportunity to have an effort at goal, but defensive numbers get the ball clear.
   Milan numbers are hounding Barcelona in midfield with Riccardo Montolivo leading the charge. Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernández want time to play the ball but red and black shirts are quickly snapping at their heels.
Minute 16 Corner awarded to Milan,El Shaarawy (Milan) takes the corner.That was a good chance for Milan!,Boateng (Milan) misses the target.

A lovely touch from Kevin-Prince Boateng sends Stephan El Shaarawy free down the left. The forward cuts into the box but a heavy touch sees the chance go begging.
Minute 17 Ambrosini (Milan) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Xavi Hernández (Barcelona).
Milan are more than holding their own, this time probing down their right. Kevin-Prince Boateng sends a cross in from the right but it is just too close to Víctor Valdés for Stephan El Shaarawy.

Minute 20 Abbiati (Milan) makes a save.
Xavi Hernández tries an effort from a long way out and it is heading towards the top corner forcing the Milan keeper to get to his right and save solidly.
Riccardo Montolivo refuses to let Lionel Messi get away.

Minute 23 Fàbregas (Barcelona) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Boateng (Milan).
Minute 25 Mexès (Milan) is booked.
The Frenchman is booked for bringing down Lionel Messi. Milan have now collected 18 yellow cards in the competition. They accumulated more than any other team left in the round of 16 during the group stage.
Daniel Alves cuts out the danger as Stephan El Shaarawy attempts to get forward.

  Stephan El Shaarawy is causing Barcelona a few problems as he floats between their defensive and midfield lines. A neat turn works space, but the forward just misplaces his pass as he attempts to send Giampaolo Pazzini clear.
   Minute 35 Busquets (Barcelona) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Muntari (Milan).
Milan have the chance to send the ball into the area, with a free-kick in Barcelona territory. Riccardo Montolivo will take.
   Minute 36 Boateng (Milan) has an attempt on goal.
The free-kick is sent into the area from the left, and cleared to the edge of the area, where the midfielder's powerful shot is blocked strongly by a Barcelona boot.

   Barcelona creep closer to the Milan box, but the hosts are back in numbers and shut down the visiting passing very well after cramping the Blaugrana players for space.
It is not working for Barcelona at the moment, as their usual fluent play is being successfully stifled. Numbers in defence and strong tackling form Milan hold them at bay.

The referee blows for half-time.
Milan will be delighted with their first-half performance, as they hassled Barcelona all over the pitch to stifle the visitor's play. With Stephan El Shaarawy proving a threat in attack for the hosts they will be the happier at the interval, with the visitors failing to really test Christian Abbiati in the home goal, despite superior possession.

The second half begins.
       We are under way again in the second half. Milan ran tirelessly in the first period, and Barcelona will be hoping that the hosts begin to tire, and space opens up
     A good period of possession from Milan, who give Barcelona a taste of their own medicine, knocking the ball around swiftly and starving the opposition of the ball in the early part of the second half.

An excellent finish gives Milan the lead. A free-kick is rolled to Riccardo Montolivo who strikes at goal from 30 metres. The effort hits Cristián Zapata on the edge of the area, falling to Boateng who swiveled and drove a left-footed effort into the corner.Boateng (Milan) scores.

Jordi Roura throws the Chilean into the mix,hoping his pace can make a difference. Sánchez scored in Udinese Calcio's 4-4 draw at Milan in 2010/11.


Minute 63 Messi (Barcelona) misses the target.
From almost 30 metres out the Argentinian has his first effort of the night. It is not up to his usual standards and soars high over the bar into the happy Milan fans behind.

Minute 66 Puyol (Barcelona) is penalised for a foul on Pazzini (Milan).
It is not working for Barcelona at the moment. Their passing breaks down when substitute Alexis Sánchez miscontrols, allowing Milan to clear upfield and relieve the pressure.

A cleared corner is headed back into he area by Ignazio Abate, with Giampaolo Pazzini controlling on his chest before turning on a volley and sending towards the corner. The effort is not a clean strike and Víctor Valdés saves comfortably.
Space opens up for Xavi Hernández 25 metres from goal. Instead of shooting he opts to slip in Alexis Sánchez, but Ignazio Abate makes an excellent challenge to cut out the ball.

       Minute 76 ,Iniesta (Barcelona) misses the target.
Barcelona show their patience is being tested, as instead of continuing their usual passing around the area the midfielder tries his luck from 25 metres. The low effort zips just wide.
  Minute 79 Abate (Milan) is penalised for a foul on Alexis Sánchez (Barcelona).
   The substitute holds it up well 25 metres from goal, before the full-back brings him down. Xavi Hernández or Lionel Messi look the likely candidates to shoot.

The midfielder shoots from left of centre, but the free-kick drops just over the bar.

The lead is doubled with a great goal. M'Baye Niang breaks into the area on the right, pops the ball back to Stephan El Shaarawy, who loops a pass left to an onrushing Muntari to slam a volley into the bottom corner.

Barcelona are pushing for the equaliser and Xavi Hernández sends a corner to the front post where the captain cannot turn his header on goal, under pressure from Massimo Ambrosini.

Milan are dealing with the late Barcelona pressure well, maintaining their impressive work rate when without the ball, before staying very cool in possession, running the clock down and starving the visitors of the chance to get back into it.
raoré (Milan) has an effort on goal.
Lionel Messi gives the ball away allowing the substitute to power forward. The home side have three men on two defenders, but Traoré opts to shoot instead of pass, and his effort from 25 metres is easily blocked.
The final whistle is blown.
An outstanding Milan performance is rewarded with an excellent win. Clinical finishes from Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari after the break give the hosts a two-goal lead to take to Barcelona, who for all their possession never really threatened Christian Abbiati thanks to a great defensive showing.
